она пожертвовала для «подарка» турецкому визирю Мехмет-паше, командовавшему армией Порты. Правда, накануне переговоров русские дали настолько сильный отпор неприятелю, что на следующий день даже отборные его части — янычары отказались идти на приступ лагеря Петра I. После заключения почетного для русских в их положении перемирия разъяренный шведский король Карл XII пытался убедить визиря не выпускать русских из окружения. На что визирь ответил: «...ты де их (русских) уже отведал, а и мы их видели, и буде хочешь, атакуй их своими людьми», а он «мира с ними постановленного не нарушит». В тот же день русская армия покинула свой лагерь, а за упущенную победу и «подарок» визирь вскоре поплатился головой.
В Уставе 1714г. говорилось, что орден «учреждается в честь благороднейшей и святой мученицы Екатерины » и должен состоять из «дам честных и богобоязненных, замужних и беззамужних». Предусматривалось, что орден должен включать в себя «госпожу ордена», дам Большого креста из принцесс царской крови, 12 дам Большого креста, которые не были в родстве с царствующим домом, и 94 кавалерственные дамы, включая иностранных. Там же указывалось, что пожалование этой наградой зависит от Начальницы ордена, и ей же предоставлялось право лишать орденов всех, за исключением Великих княгинь и княжен императорского дома. Право лишать последних было предоставлено исключительно императору.
Знаки ордена - Большие и Малые кресты — отличались только по размеру и богатству отделки камнями, внешне они напоминали крест лишь очень отдаленно. Знак ордена представлял собой овальный медальон в оправе из алмазов, в центре - сидящая святая Екатерина (иногда на орудии мучений - колесе), держащая белый крест, на концах которого помещены буквы "D.S.F.R." - сокращенное латин-

becoming prisoner to the Sultan. The imminent captivity was avoided thanks to some skillful negotiations and the whole lot of Ekaterina's jewelry, which she surrendered as the "present" to the Turkish Vizier Mehmet Pasha, who was in command of the Army of Porta. It has to be noted, however, that on the eve of the negotiations the Russians had given such a fierce fight to the enemy, that on the next day even the Turkey's selected units - janissaries - refused to carry an assault against the Peter's camp. The ensuing truce, which could be regarded as a successful outcome, taking into account the situation the Russian Army was faced with, enraged the King of Sweden Karl XII, who made every effort to persuade the Vizier not to give up the siege of the Russian camp. The Vizier was prompt with his reply: "... you know them (the Russians), and we have seen them, and, if you want so, attack them with your people" for he (Peter) "will not break the armistice we've reached" .The Russian Army left the camp on the same day, and the Vizier soon had to pay with his head for the lost victory and "the present".
The 1714 Statute of the Order specified that the Order "is being instituted in memory of the noblest and saint martyr Catherine" and should be awarded to "the women of virtue and righteousness, whether married or single". It was stipulated that the Order should have the "Mistress of the Order", Holder Dames of the Big Cross of imperial descent, 12 Holder Dames of the Big Cross of non-imperial descent and 94 Holder Dames of the Small Cross, including foreigners. The Statute also specified that bestowing with this decoration was the jurisdiction of the Mistress of the Order and she also had the right to strip any Holder of her Order, with the exception of Grand Duchesses and Princesses of the Imperial House. They could be deprived of their decorations only by the Emperor himself.
Badges of the Order - Big and Small Crosses - differed only in size and richness of ornamentation with precious stones, and bore just a slight resemblance to the cross. The Badge of 161
